Carolina DT headed north for the weekend

Michigan State would like to add a defensive tackle to its 2010 recruiting haul, and the Spartans could get a step closer to doing that this weekend when they host Wadesboro (N.C.) Anson three-star DT Tra Thomas on his first official visit of the recruiting process.

When caught up with Thomas last week, he said a visit to East Lansing depended on his playoff schedule, and despite Anson still rolling in the post-season, Thomas has decided the timing is right to visit MSU.

"We won on Friday. Our next game is this Friday, and after the game we'll head out," 6-1, 271-pound Thomas said Sunday night, adding that he will probably drive to MSU and stay until Monday or Tuesday to have more time to check things out.

Thomas said the MSU staff, led by the recruiting efforts of defensive line coach Ted Gill, is excited Thomas is headed north to check out the program and see the Spartans play Penn State in the regular-season finale.
