Payne talks Iowa visit

In August , one of the real surprises of Iowa's Elite Camp was 2013 prospect Quinten Payne, the younger brother of current Hawkeye Cully Payne. The freshman guard was so impressive that Coach Todd Lickliter offered him a scholarship. On Saturday, he made a return trip to Iowa City and enjoyed the basketball and football experience.

"First of all it was great to see my brother and then watching the guys on the team in shirts and skins. I think they are going to be good this year. Then I got to see all the coaches and talk to them, which was great. It was a great environment," Payne said.

The 6-foot-3 prospect, who now lives in Ft. Meyers, Florida, then went over to Kinnick Stadium and loved the game day atmosphere.

"That was a great experience and much more than I ever expected," he said. "It was a little cold, but it was a lot of fun. I loved seeing the environment and hope to see that for the basketball team this season."

Payne is still surprised that he left his initial trip to Iowa City with a scholarship offer from Coach Lickliter and the Hawkeyes.

"I was pretty floored when they offered. He called my brother and I into his office after camp was over and then he and Coach Jordan were there. Then Coach Lickliter said he would like to have me in his program and offer me a scholarship."

Since that time, Payne says his high school coach has been receiving mail from: Florida, Miami,FL, Auburn, LSU, Clemson, and USC.

His older brother made his initial college choice early in his high school career and then changed his mind after that. Does he plan to make an early decision on a college program?

"I'm not too worried about it right now. I just want to let recruiting play out for a while."

With his brother playing at Iowa this season, will Payne make another trip or two north from Florida and get to see his older brother in action at Carver-Hawkeye?

"Not sure when I will be back to Iowa City again, but if we have a week off, I would love to come back this season to see a game or two," Payne said.
