No position at Auburn is more difficult to assess than defensive tackles.
The Tigers were atrocious against the run last season, allowing 198 rushing yards per game. Why did that happen? There are so many theories. It may have been the coaching. It may have been the playing. It may have been the play-calling. Luck, good or bad, is a factor as well.
Still, Auburn has some good tackles. Gabe Wright is one of them because of good quickness and emerging power as a gap-control element. He was knocked out of holes routinely as a freshman in 2011, but was more resilient last fall. Wright showed the ability to hold a gap in a system that accentuated that skill for interior linemen. It was a thankless job, but Wright was willing to takes his licks inside to help force ball-carriers to the outside.
He finished with only 11 tackles in 11 games, though four of those tackles were for loss. Wright was a bigger factor than the statistics suggest.
He's now a junior with 24 games of experience. Wright is in much better condition, though he seems prone to foot problems. He missed a large chunk of spring drills because of a foot injury, but recently was spotted at an Auburn camp jogging without issue.
