White rebuilding image

AUBURN -- Everything came easily for Ryan White when he played high-school ball in Tallahassee, Fla., and his transition to college ball wasn't exactly a strain.


He was starting games as a sophomore last season.


Yet something went terribly wrong last October. White wasn't playing well, the coaches noticed and soon pulled him from contention for a starting job. Rather that use the setback as a motivational moment, the quarterback-turned-cornerback began looking for someone to blame.


"I'm not going to lie -- at first, I thought the coaches were against me," said White, now a junior. "When I saw my teammates out there and I saw them probably give up a (long play) … you always think you can do better."


It was the wrong reaction. And defensive coordinator Ted Roof didn't like it, choosing to allocate playing time in almost every direction by White's during the season's second half.
