In its 27th year of honoring the nation's best high school athletes,, The
Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPNHS, recently announced Alex Carter of Briar Woods High School as its 2011-12 Gatorade Virginia Football
Player of the Year. Carter is the first Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the
Year to be chosen from Briar Woods High School.
The 6-foot, 195-pound senior defensive back and wide receiver has led the
Falcons to a 12-1 record and a berth in the Group AA Div. 4 semifinals against
Grafton, scheduled for Dec. 2. Carter has recorded 35 tackles with four
interceptions and 10 pass breakups on defense through 13 games. He has also
rushed for 443 yards and five touchdowns on 37 carries, caught 30 passes for 388
yards and two touchdowns, and returned three kickoffs for scores. The Dulles
District Defensive Player of the Year, Carter has been selected to play in the
2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Carter has verbally committed to play football on an athletic scholarship at Stanford University beginning in the fall of 2012.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball,
?softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National
Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by
ESPNHS and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top
sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep
sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
