SPARQ Ratings soar in Texas
Year in and year out, Texas is one of the top states in terms of producing football talent, and judging from the early results from Saturday's NIKE Camp in College Station, that trend will continue in the Class of 2007.
Nine participants at Saturday's camp posted a SPARQ Rating* over 90, led by Houston Cy Creek DB Phillip Ofili, who took home top honors at 93.99.
Ofili, a 5-10 1/2, 189 pound cornerback who also had a very good day in drills, posted his score after testing very well in all four elements, sprinting to a 4.45 in the 40, a 4.06 shuttle, benching 19 reps and jumping 37.4 inches in the vertical.
Ofili narrowly outdistanced a pair of defensive backs with the same first name from the same high school.
5-9, 164 pound cornerback Taylor Charbonnet was just behind Ofili at 93.59, after racing to a 4.37 in the 40 and a 3.94 shuttle, to go along with very good marks in the bench and vertical.
Charbonnet's teammate at The Woodlands, 6-0, 189 pound Taylor Skaufel, posted the camp's third-best rating at 92.78, with a camp-best 3.90 shuttle and a 4.57 40.
All three players should see their profiles rise in the next few weeks following their standout showings, particularly Ofili, who is still yet to receive his first offer.
He had a solid junior season, recording 45 tackles and two interceptions, and currently lists Texas A&M, Florida, Texas, Notre Dame and Michigan as his favorite colleges.
*Taking the standard measurements of the football combine, the SPARQ Rating weighs and combines the 40-yard dash, 20-yard shuttle, vertical jump and bench press into a single number that measures an athlete's overall athleticism. Thus, football players can track the progress of their training, through occasional tests, and compare SPARQ Ratings with teammates, training partners and competitors.
