December 19, 2003Barlow 63, Hillsboro 62 OT
It took an overtime to determine the winner of Friday's first game in the consolation bracket. Barlow got two double-doubles from 6-foot-8 senior Tyler Otis (22 points, 12 rebounds) and 6-foot-5 junior forward Jake Glisson (17 points, 10 rebounds).
Hillsboro was led again by impressive junior Brad Hodge, who scored 23 points and pulled 18 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 forward has played consistently strong despite the two losses in the tourney. James Loe added 19 points.
Sunset 56, Benson 45
Defense and a balanced effort helped Sunset claim the victory. Benson turned the ball over 24 times and Sharrard Watson led the Apollos again with 15 points. Josh Jackson added 13 points and six steals.
Verbum Dei 67, Marist 61 OT
Neither team could ever break the game open with missed shots and missed opportunities but it still proved to be a great game for the sparse crowd.
Matt Shaw came alive on Friday morning. The 6-foot-8 sophomore erupted for 25 points and 14 rebounds. After a very disappointing first round loss, Shaw redeemed himself and was the anchor in the Verbum Dei attack. We'll have a feature story on him soon.
The defense of freshman guards Terrell Jones and Jalonni Diggs in the overtime period helped seal the victory. Diggs, a 6-foot-1 point guard, had a quiet but versatile game with six rebounds, four rebounds and three assists.
Vince Fuller, a 6-foot-3 junior guard, had a hard time getting his shot to fall (3-14 FG) but finished with 13 points. The athletic guard has a nice high arcing shot and above average basketball skills. We'll expound on him in a feature story coming soon.
For, Marist Ryan Coldren put it on the floor and has small forward skills but could be a solid West Coast Conference post. The 6-foot-8 forward finished with 22 points and seven rebounds.
Tyler Coleman just picked apart the Verbum Dei defense by driving to the lane and scoring or kicking it out for the perimeter score. He's a quick handed defender that isn't afraid to get into a scrap for the ball.
Jefferson 73, Hillcrest 48
Jefferson, one of the top teams in Oregon, rebounded from a disappointing loss in the first round and absolutely demolished the DJ White led team from Alabama.
In his first varsity start, 5-foot-9 sophomore point guard Marquis Hall scored 20 points (8-10 FG, 4-4 3FG) and continues the long line of amazing guards from the Jefferson program.
6-foot-8 junior post Brian Morris (6 points, 5 rebounds) did a great job of limiting White (6 points, 3 rebounds, 4 blocks) inside the post and kept the Indiana-bound big man out of the offense.
