July 20, 2012As an all-district receiver and team MVP, Brent Leonard was sure that colleges would be knocking down his door with offers to continue his football career into college. While no colleges did make any offers, Leonard did connect with ULM assistant coach Luke Wells, who offered him a walk-on spot; a challenge that he accepted.
"I had a real good connection with the ULM coaches," Leonard said. "I really liked the school and the town when I went on my official visit and I just knew that is where I wanted to be."
Four years later, Leonard is looking to build on a 2011 season that landed him second team All-Sun Belt honors as he led the Warhawks with 69 catches for 751 yards and four scores.
"It's been a long journey, but been a fun one," he said. "The players I've met we have all been through, we are all ready for a good senior year for Monroe. We are going to take it game by game, but we have goals - win all of our home games, win conference, and go to a bowl game."
Leonard will be just one of two senior receivers this year, along with Julian Griffin, meaning he feels a need to leave his legacy behind for the underclassmen and the Warhawk program.
"We've had some 7-on-7 scrimmages, and there are a lot of big play makers out there," he said. "These young guys see us as seniors competing all the time and they are now always going after one another to push them and continue to make themselves better. This program will only be getting better in the season to come."
