November 30, 2011
Each week during the season, we look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing. Here is this week's version:
Baylor scored 66 on Texas Tech on Saturday, becoming the 33rd team to reach the 60-point plateau this season. That's the second-highest total in the past 10 seasons; there were 38 such occurrences last season. The fewest 60-point games in the past 10 seasons? There were just 15 in 2006. That's the only time in that span that there were fewer than 20 instances.
To no one's surprise, the SEC has five of the nation's top 10 teams when it comes to total defense (Alabama is first, LSU second, South Carolina fourth, Georgia fifth and Florida 10th). And, not surprisingly, the Big 12 has four of the top 10 in total offense (Baylor is second, Oklahoma State third, Oklahoma fourth and Texas A&M seventh). The highest-ranked Big 12 team in total defense is Texas at ninth, but that's the only league team in the top 50. The highest-ranked SEC team in total offense is Arkansas at 28th, and eight of the league's teams rank 75th or worse, including five that are 101st or worse.

There are six leagues with at least 12 members, and the Big Ten - by far - has the most rushing TDs among those half-dozen conferences with 273. The SEC is second with 237, while Conference USA is last in that group with 217. Of the six leagues with at least 12 members, the Pac-12 has the most TD passes with 308. Second is the MAC with 274, while the Big Ten is last with 204.
Our weekly update on Houston QB Case Keenum: He is going to own a ton of records when he finishes his career after two more games. He owns career records for total offense (18,771 yards), passing yards (17,855), TD passes (145), completions (1,527), 300-yard games (36) and 4,000-yard seasons (three). Actually, he should have three 5,000-yard seasons after Saturday's C-USA title game against Southern Miss. Keenum has 4,726 yards going into the game with the Golden Eagles.
Staying with Houston, the Cougars lead the nation in total offense (613.3 yards per game), passing offense (449.8 yards per game) and scoring offense (52.7 points per game). The points-per-game average has them on a pace to break the NCAA single-season record for points. The 14-game record for points is 716 by Oklahoma in 2008 (an average of 51.1 ppg), and Houston is on a pace to finish with 738. Army holds the record for single-season average at 56.0 in 1944 (506 points in nine games). The NCAA record for total offense is 7,978 yards by Tulsa in 2008 (Gus Malzahn was the coordinator), but Houston is on a pace to break that record: At their current average, the Cougars would finish with 8,568 yards. Finally, the Cougars also are on a pace to set the NCAA single-season passing mark; the record is 6,179 yards, by Texas Tech in 2003, and Houston is on a pace to have 6,297.
Eight teams are converting better than 50 percent of their third-down opportunities - and those teams have a combined 78-14 record. The eight, listed alphabetically: Boise State, BYU, Georgia Tech, Houston, Oklahoma State, Stanford, TCU and Wisconsin.
