September 26, 2010As it weren't evident already following Saturday's events, Purdue looks like it will be moving forward for the balance of the 2010 season without quarterback Robert Marve, who injured his left knee against Toledo.
"I talked to him last night and he was obviously down, very disappointed that he's injured," Coach Danny Hope said Sunday morning. "He's put a lot of effort into trying to become the great player he can be and he keeps having setbacks. He's going to have to regroup.
Hope said Marve will have an MRI Monday.
"The early prognosis is not encouraging," Hope said. "... Right now, it seems like he's going to be out for a while."
GoldandBlack.com has learned the initial diagnosis was a torn anterior cruciate ligament, the same injury Marve sustained in the same knee in the spring prior to him coming to Purdue.
Hope said he's "more optimistic" about wide receiver Justin Siller, who left the game in the second half and was seen limping on the sideline, though the coach said he doesn't know much about the senior's condition.
(Because of the bye week, Purdue coaches are heading out of town to recruit Sunday, and thus Hope was speaking to the media much earlier than he ordinarily would Sunday.)
If Siller is healthy, he could find himself playing quarterback again, at least in a part-time capacity, Hope acknowledged after the Toledo game.
Hope said Sunday that redshirt freshman Rob Henry and freshman Sean Robinson are Nos. 1-2 on the depth chart, respectively, with Marve out. Purdue is also without last year's No. 2, sophomore Caleb TerBush, who's academically ineligible.
Henry and Robinson are Purdue's only two available scholarship quarterbacks.
"We might have to from a necessity standpoint," Hope said Sunday of the possibility of working Siller at QB, "but we'll wait and see what happens with (Marve) first."
Siller started three games at quarterback in 2008, moving back to his original position after playing running back most of the season. Injuries to starter Curtis Painter and backup Joey Elliott made the move necessary.
The junior's in his first season at wide receiver after not playing in 2009.
Should Marve's injury prove to be long-term, Purdue would be without its No. 1 quarterback, receiver Keith Smith) and running back (Ralph Bolden), all due to knee injuries.
