Lazy Thursday practice for Sun Devils
After what we thought was a great practice on Wednesday, the Sun Devils came out and were more lethargic Thursday on a hot evening at the final practice before Friday's public scrimmage at Sun Devil Stadium.
Rudy Carpenter worked primarily with the first team at quarterback, but we're not reading anything into that as he and Sam Keller have taken turns running the "ones" over the last couple weeks with Keller getting about 70 percent or so of the overall first-team snaps. But we thought Carpenter had a better day overall. As far as which quarterback performed better over the course of the entire camp, we think it was about even. Honestly.
The position groups that had the best practice on Thursday were probably the offensive line and running backs. We've seen the first-team offensive line do a great job of run blocking all camp long and that continued in their final workout before the scrimmage. Brandon Rodd has been excellent all camp. He's a guy who quietly goes about his business but at the end of every practice we've seen, we can't remember him getting clearly beat on even one single play.
Kudos have to go to new running backs coach John Wrenn whom we believe is having a big impact on the overall run game.
Ryan Torain in particular had stunning back-to-back workouts the last two times out. He's looking like an NFL running back right now, no doubt about it. But he's not the only one standing out. Shaun Dewitty has improved substantially as camp has gone on and Dimitri Nance was fantastic on Thursday. His footwork and quickness is very surprising and impressive.
