Day 3 practice brings big plays and full pads
Day 3 of Beaver football spring camp brought us a little bit of a surprise as the players came out from Valley Football Center dressed in full pads. It was originally thought that this would happen until next week at some point, but that was not the case as Mike Riley let his guys pad up and do a little hitting today.
"I think the guys were anxious to get the pads on and anxious to get to hitting, so we let them," Coach Riley admitted after practice. "We made it through pretty clean and it was a good practice."
As practice continued on, it became apparent that today was a day for big plays on both sides of the ball. Whether it was 60 yard bombs over the top or interceptions coming back the other way, this was a practice not to miss from a spectator's point of view.
Practice started off with individual position group work, much like every other practice. A focus seemed to be on technique at just about every position group. With the wide-outs it was an emphasis on proper route running, getting in and out of breaks, trying to cut out wasted motions/steps to make them more efficient and being quicker in the routes.
After the quick individual work, the flow of practice moved into group work. The linebackers and defensive backs went through different coverage packages for different down & yardage scenarios, while the offense went through skeleton passing drills.
