Newcomers come through on 'D'
Daren Bates was playing high school football last year. Nick Fairley was at a junior college. Adam Herring was used mainly on special teams.
But Saturday, all three made their first-ever starts for Auburn. And the results were positive, especially for Fairley, who tallied five tackles, 0.5 tackles-for-loss, one fumble recovery and two quarterback pressures from his defensive tackle position.
"I thought he showed up and I was most proud of him when he made a mistake, he kept going. He responded the right way," AU defensive coordinator Ted Roof said. "He played hard and played solid and that was a good start for him."
Bates, a true freshman, finished with three tackles and an interception, which stopped a Louisiana Tech drive four plays after AU fumbled the ball on its own 43-yard line.
