Position Preview: Running Backs
There are a lot worse situations Greg Knox could have walked into when he accepted the position to be Mississippi State's running backs coach.
The first-year assistant coach inherited three senior running backs with plenty of experience playing in the Southeastern Conference in Anthony Dixon, Christian Ducre and Arnil Stallworth.
"It's a good situation," Knox said. "We've got three seniors that are very experienced kids and very athletic. They are very productive players. We are really excited about the upcoming season with those guys. "They all bring something different to the table. We want to use all their skills and abilities because all three of them are very talented. We are going to keep all of them involved."
The trio of senior backs have combined for 3,520 yards and 37 touchdowns on the ground during their careers.
One of Knox's coaching philosophies is for the veteran backs to pass down their knowledge and experience to the underclassmen to help them prepare for the future.
"I try to teach my seniors that way they can help coach some of the young guys," Knox said. "I try to get them to set good examples for the young guys to follow. That's one of the biggest things that we try to make sure that they do so when they leave and exit out the door, the work habits that they left behind follow them."
Dixon is headliner of the group having started in the backfield for the Bulldogs the past two season. He has played in all 37 games during his career including 29 starting calls. He has rushed for 2,603 yards and 30 touchdowns during his career and holds the school record for attempts and touchdowns scored.
