Practice Notebook: Offense rules day two
Texas A&M hit the practice fields once again Tuesday for the second day of August camp and the last day in helmets and shorts. On Wednesday, the Aggies will kick dawn shells - helmets and shoulder pads with shorts - and finally be able to hit during a morning session kicking off at 8:25 a.m.
It'll be the first time this August that the Aggies will be able to get physical with one another, and that is something head coach Mike Sherman is looking forward to putting his team through.
"We're hoping it'll get more physical. That's a part of this game and we're hoping to take it to another level tomorrow and have a physical practice. Obviously it's just shoulder pads and helmets but I think it'll bring out the best in a lot of guys I hope."
On Tuesday, however, Sherman said that he felt the offense carried the day even though it's hard to tell without the team drilling with contact. Junior quarterback Jerrod Johnson hit sophomore receiver Jeff Fuller on a number of routes against the defense and the two playmakers seem to have picked up right where they left off in the spring when it comes to the chemistry the two share.
"I thought it favored the offense a little bit this evening. I thought they caught the ball a little bit better, protected the ball a little bit better and ran the ball a little bit better than we did yesterday," Sherman said. "Part of it is defensively we've been staying pretty basic. Each day we're putting in a certain coverage, so a lot of things we did on offense were things that affect that coverage. For the most part except for our receivers didn't block that well we did pretty good out there today."
