The Bulldogs are back
Football is finally here.
This afternoon Mississippi State players reported back to campus (even though many never left) to officially begin the 2009 season with a team meeting at 2 p.m.
First year head coach Dan Mullen briefly met with his players Sunday afternoon and will have the first full team practice Monday afternoon beginning at 3:15 p.m.
"The first meeting today is just a lot of introductory stuff going on," Mullen said. "We are meeting about compliance, about hydration and how to handle our bodies to keep ourselves going through two-a-days. We've got final exams the next two days so we are going to break up pretty quickly and have a team study hall so they can study for their finals."
The first practice for MSU will be for freshman only as 15 players suit up in the maroon and white for the first time. Johnthan Banks, Josh Boyd, Chad Bumphis, Montrell Conner, [fb]Fletcher Cox[/db], Brandon Heavens, Gabriel Jackson, Johnathan McKenzie, LaDarius Perkins, Tyler Russell, William Shumpert, Deontae Skinner, Chris Smith, Dennis Thames and Nickoe Whitley will all participate in Monday morning's workout.
"It's really our first opportunity with the freshmen as a coaching staff," Mullen said. "It gives them a chance to get out there and for us to see them and coach them one-on-one. We can teach them how to tie their shoes, how to get taped and put their pads on. We really want to take our time and teach them every little thing they need to know before they get thrown in to the fire with the older guys."
The only true freshman signee that has yet to arrive is three-star wide receiver Ricco Sanders. Sanders finished his summer work Friday and must pass through the clearing house before becoming eligible to practice.
