Bailey on the comeback trail
In the regular season finale against Florida on March 4, many Mississippi State fans grimaced as sophomore center Elgin Bailey lay on the court writhing in pain with his left ankle dislocated and dangling as trainers and medical personnel examined him.
Those same fans feared the worst and prayed for the best.
Bailey's injury cost him the remainder of the season but he is now back after surgery leading the way during the Bulldogs summer conditioning program.
"I am starting to run a little bit now and do a little jogging," said Bailey. "What I am really trying to work on is my planting and cutting. I have the majority of my movement back but planting and cutting is the main thing I am worried about right now. I just want to get back in condition and get back in shape and go from there."
Bailey was having perhaps the best performance of his MSU career in the game against the Gators with six points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist in 12 minutes off the bench but it all ended when his 265-pound frame came crashing down on his ankle after attempting to block a shot.
Since the game was being televised by Raycom Sports, Bailey's injury soon made it's way to Youtube and has been viewed over 4,000 times some of them by Bailey himself.
"I have watched the clip over and over," said Bailey. "At first, I watched it and used to say 'Why me?'. But God lets things happen for a reason. But I have learned more by just watching after I got injured."
Bailey is still not fully recovered from the injury but has paced the team during summer workouts. Bailey has been ahead of the pack by at least 20-yards when the team begins pushing sleds in the Shira Complex.
