Osby prepping for sophomore success
The experience Mississippi State forward Romero Osby earned as a true freshman was invaluable last season.
The 6-foot-8 forward saw action in all 36 games last season averaging 12.6 minutes per contest. He is hoping to build off of that and turn it into and even more successful sophomore campaign.
Osby admitted that things were even more physical in the Southeastern Conference than even he had anticipated.
"It was more physical than I expected," Osby said. "A lot of people told me it was going to be physical but it reminded me of big time AAU camps where there was a lot of big time talent there and everybody was on another level. A lot of people have asked me if I regret not playing as much my freshman year but I took it as a stepping stone. I got a chance to sit and watch and learn. I was also thrown in there at times, even in crunch time coach left me in a couple times and that gave me a lot of experience. I feel like this year the sky is the limit for me and for the team also."
As a freshman, Osby averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and shot 43.2-percent from the floor.
Osby was scheduled to travel to China this summer on a two week Sports Reach Tour but things fell through at the last minute. So instead of just taking the rest of the summer off, Osby has been hard at work both terms with strength coach Richard Akins after a brief visit in Meridian with his family in May.
"My summer has been going real well," Osby said. "I've been playing well and working really hard with Coach Akins that is mandatory and then some stuff on my own trying get better for next year. I'm trying to be bigger, faster and stronger. I've got my weight up a little bit and my strength up a little bit. I've been working on my foot speed so that I will be able to guard those perimeter players this year maybe playing the three and the four.
Osby has added seven pounds to his frame this summer now tipping the scales at 237-pounds.
