Show Me State star puts on show in Oxford
Kony Ealy is busy with hoops this time of year, pouring in some 17 points a night for the AAU-affiliated St. Louis Eagles.
However, it's football that is controlling the clock for the two-sport star from New Madrid, Mo.
Ealy, a 6-foot-5, 228-pound defensive end from New Madrid (New Madrid County Central), Mo., has offers from Missouri, Georgia Tech and Memphis, but a fourth school appears poised to jump in the mix. Go inside for more.
Ealy spent a day last week at Ole Miss' football camp, and while he left Oxford without a scholarship offer, one appears to be forthcoming.
"It went fine," Ealy said. "I talked to all of the coaches up there. They were just telling me that they were keeping an eye on me and stuff like that. I got a chance to see the campus. It was very nice and it was big, especially the football stadium."
Ealy said he and the Rebels' staff didn't discuss scholarships. However, Ealy's high school coach talked to several members of the Rebels' staff.
"They said they're going to offer, but they didn't show me any offer," Ealy said. "They said they're going to keep evaluating me."
Ealy has offers from Memphis, Georgia Tech and Missouri. He's been to Columbia (four hours from his New Madrid home) and Atlanta and he plans a trip to Memphis soon. He said those three schools and Ole Miss are even.
One key component in Ealy's decision, he said, will be basketball. Ealy, who scored 17 points per game as a junior, is playing forward for the Eagles, and he wants a chance to play hoops at the college level as well.
"I like both sports equally," said Ealy, who added that he's talked to "quite a few" college basketball coaches about playing football as well. "They don't mind."
Ealy, who said he doesn't plan to make a decision until after his senior season, recorded 14 quarterback sacks last season.
