Stephenson defensive tackle Mike Thornton recently received an offer from Georgia, which doesn't come as a big surprise.
The 6-foot-2, 280-pounder from Stephenson High is one of the state's most touted players at his position and was named the top defensive line prospect at the Athens Nike Camp back in April.
Georgia's offer is one of 18 already for Thornton, but does it come a little too late?
"That (the offer) was really the first that I've heard from Georgia," Thornton told UGASports.
Earlier, Thornton said this about Georgia on Tiger Illustrated, the Rivals' site that covers the Clemson Tigers:
"I just got that offer," Thornton said. "I was like about time. They should know me by now since I'm an instate guy."
Apparently, Thornton isn't too upset that the Bulldogs might have come in a little late.
The nation's No. 40 defensive tackle still plans on visiting Athens to attend a defensive line camp at Georgia, one of at least two summer visits he expects to make. Thornton, who grew up in Columbus, is also slated to check out Auburn.
"Auburn's still a great school," he said. "They continue to win. They're good."
The Tigers are just one of the schools to have offered Thornton thus far, a list that includes South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, West Virginia and Penn State.
Wherever he goes, Thornton has set his goals high.
"I think I'll be able to come in and get playing time my freshman year, and maybe be a starter as a sophomore," he said. "I think I can make a big impact wherever I go."
But opportunity isn't the only thing Thornton expects to get out of his college experience.
"I'm going to be looking for a team that wins football games, but I also want to find a school where I can get a good education," he said. 'I'd also like to go to a school that's going to get me noticed to hopefully get to the next level while I get my degree."
Thornton recorded 95 tackles and collected four sacks for Stephenson last year.
"Even though I don't know where I'm going to go, I'll compete anywhere," said Thornton.
