Bulldogs pickup three-star big man
Mississippi State closed out the 2009 recruiting class today with the signing of three-star Selma, Ala., power forward Wendell Lewis.
The 6-foot-9, 230-pounder picked the Bulldogs over nine other offers becoming the second and final signee of Rick Stansbury's recruiting class for next season.
Lewis made his decision this morning after narrowing his list down to two finalists, MSU and Auburn, on after returning from his official visit to Starkville.
"They've got a great program," Lewis said. "They are known for big men and post players. I like the coaches there. The coaches and the players are very nice. I like their facilities and I really like their academic center. The players and the coaches there are real nice.""
Lewis will be able to learn firsthand from one of the Bulldogs' best big men in two-time All-SEC Defensive Player of the Year Jarvis Varnado.
"I feel like (Varnado) can teach me a lot," Lewis said. "I think he can teach me how to play, what to do and what not to do. He can show me how to block shots and maybe show me a new move that maybe I don't have. I feel like I can learn a lot from him."
Lewis was once committed to Middle Tennessee and also had offers from Western Kentucky, Alabama, Jacksonville State, South Alabama, Troy and Alabama State.
