Scrimmage draws two Missouri recruits
Nine years ago, Damon Paul became the first father of the University Academy football team. Nine years ago, Paul was the spark plug and coach of the initial football team at the Kansas City, Mo., school.
After two years fielding solely JV teams, University Academy began playing at the varsity level, and Paul would routinely schedule games for the 1-A school against upper division opponents. After years of two- and three-win seasons, Paul finally saw the fruits of his labor pay off in 2008, as the team went 7-3 in the regular season, reaching the playoffs for the first time in school history. The Gryphons fell to Tipton (MO) in the opening round of the Missouri state playoffs, but the moment still held significance with the University Academy community.
Now, Paul is seeing his efforts pay off in another way. For the first time since he initiated the football program, the Gryphons have a legitimate chance to send a player to a FBS football team.
