Owens has family history with Auburn
Bessemer (Ala.) Jess Lanier linebacker LaDarius Owens has been to Auburn many times. He's heard many stories about the Tigers' football history.
The 6-foot-2, 225-ounder had Auburn influence in his family, one uncle in particular.
Owens' uncle, James Owens, was the first black scholarship football player at Auburn. James Owens, a Fairfield-native, played at Auburn from 1970-72, was part of the "Amazins" that finished '72 10-1, which included a 17-16 victory over Alabama, known better to Tiger fans as the "Punt Bama Punt" game.
