Collison is ready for business
On Tuesday UCLA senior point guard, Darren Collison was focused and fired up about what UCLA needs to do. He is definitely not faint of heart and the focus in his eyes displayed a player who is ready to lead his team and get them back on the winning trail.
Do you think this is a pivotal point in the season where you get it together or you see the Pac 10 title slip away?
Collison: "I do, Cal is a first-round of a NCAA Tournament game. You have one game and cannot lose in the NCAA tournament from here on out we can't lose. Every game right now, is a NCAA Tournament Game, beginning with round number one against Cal."
Have you ever experience this kind of sense of urgency before while you have been here during the regular season?
Collison: "A little bit, but not as much as right now. About 40 percent, almost 50 percent are young players, freshmen so, it's a little harder than in the previous years, but now there is a lot more self urgency.
"Like I said, against Cal it's going to be a NCAA Tournament game in the first round."
Do you think you need a little more rest to prepare for crunch time in the game since you are doing so much?
Collison: "Coach (Ben Howland) he's trying to figure that out, but at the same time it's when you take and give. How much can he give me because of losing something. Jerime Anderson has been doing a good job of taking my minutes when I do go on the bench so we are not really losing too much, but at the same time, I think it really comes down mentally. Usually I fight through it mentally.
"We are going to get tired. I'm only going to have so many games at UCLA. I don't want to back down and just give it all away. I'm going to fight through it. I know I have been playing a lot of minutes and coach has been asking of me a lot, but I only have so many games left at UCLA.
"We all just have to push through it mentally and we will be alright."
