Dragons Attack at Verizon Today
November 22, 2008 - Drexel University, fresh off a scintillating 66-64 victory over Philadelphia Big Five rival Penn, takes on the Georgetown Hoyas today in Washington, D.C. Tip off is 1 pm, with the Verizon Center being the game's site.
Against Penn, Drexel (1-0) prevailed despite blowing a 14 point first half lead and seven point halftime advantage. Penn had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds from the foul line - co-leading scorer Tramayne Hawthorne (13 points) fouled a Quaker while shooting from long distance - but Penn sank only one of those foul shots and missed a game tying put back almost at the buzzer.
Scott Rodgers joined Hawthorne with 13 points, while Sammie Givens snagged 10 rebounds for the Dragons. Jamie Harris stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds along with four assists.
The Hoya faithful can expect Drexel, coached by Bruiser Flint to attempt their trademark man to man defense, a possible double-edged sword: While G'Town's guards, including Jessie Sapp, Chris Wright, and Jason Clark will have to find a way to deal with it, such a deployment could produce easy scoring opportunities for Georgetown's big men, particularly Greg Monroe and DaJuan Summers; the Dragons don't have the overall size Georgetown does.
Head Hoya John Thompson III indicated after his team's 71-62 win over Jacksonville earlier this week, rebounding would be a focus going forward (the Hoyas were then out-caromed 44-37, including yielding 19 offensive boards). Additionally, more of inside-outside offensive Hoya offensive attack should be in the offering, something Thompson also bemoaned the lack of against Jacksonville.
Unfortunately, the game is not televised, but can be heard on WTNT 570AM. Of course it will be extensively reported upon here.
