EAST LANSING - Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio was nervous about playing in inclement weather conditions on Saturday. But the near constant rainfall proved to be an ally of the Spartans who shut out Florida Atlantic 17-0.
Dantonio opened his post-game press conference by thanking the fans that stayed through the entire game. Michigan State had a paid attendance of greater than 70,000 for their game against Florida Atlantic, but several thousand fewer fans than the official number actually sat through the entire rain-soaked football game.
"First I want to thank the fans that hung in there," said Dantonio. "You have to have a little bit of perseverance to hang in there in that environment."
The fans that stayed saw Michigan State pitch their first shutout since 1999 when Michigan State blanked Northwestern 35-0. They also saw the best performance by the Michigan State offensive line this season.
The Spartan front did an excellent job opening up holes for senior Javon Ringer who totaled 282 yards on 43 carries.
"It was a tough football game," said Dantonio, "but I thought Javon Ringer played outstanding and our offensive line played very well."
