Ole Miss' QB target getting white hot
Ole Miss' top quarterback target, Drew Allen, spent the weekend in Orlando participating in a Top Gun camp, but when contacted by RebelSports.net, the Rebels were on his mind as much as his outstanding performance at the camp.
"I had a great time at Ole Miss," Allen said Monday evening while enroute back to San Antonio. "I enjoyed everything there - the coaches, the town, the school, the people - everything."
Many thought that Allen might be close to a commitment after he left Oxford last week, but Allen has apparently re-scheduled his timeline for making a decision.
"Right now, I'm probably looking at the end of August," Allen said. "Recently, I thought about committing to a certain school, but I just want to be absolutely sure."
While Allen wouldn't acknowledge it, the possibility of some other schools entering the picture may be what is delaying his decision. He said that he heard from Oklahoma about two weeks ago and has been talking with the Sooners' coaches, but is yet to receive an offer or any indication that he is their top quarterback target.
Oklahoma was in on Kanas City dual-threat quarterback Nathan Scheelhause, who announced for Illinois about five days ago, leaving the Sooners without a quarterback commitment. The Sooners are also recruiting Alabama commitment AJ McCarron, who has visited Ole Miss and left out of Oxford last month for an unofficial visit at Oklahoma.
Allen acknowledged that Oklahoma is a "big-time" program but so far hasn't moved the Sooners in among his favorites.
Allen listed Ole Miss, Wake Forest, Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt as his current favorites.
Allen visited Purdue about a week ago and stopped by Oklahoma State on his way back to San Antonio before visiting Ole Miss. It was Allen's second visit to the Oxford campus - he had previously visited in March.
He said that all his favorites are recruiting him hard and he's receiving a lot of hand-written letters and e-mails. However, Allen has always been quick to heap praise on Ole Miss offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin as well as head coach Houston Nutt.
"I've called Coach Austin about three times since I finished my visit," Allen said. "He has emphasized to me that they really want me and that I'm their top quarterback target."
It's not lost on Allen that he's gone from a somewhat unheralded recruit to a hot prospect.
"I never dreamed that it would turn out this way," he said. "I'm just glad to be in this position."
