INDIANAPOLIS - Ohio State played with the urgency of a team that needed to win to get a bid to the NCAA tournament in their Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal against Michigan State. But Michigan State senior Drew Neitzel made sure that the Buckeyes were unable to bolster their tournament resume at the expensive of his Spartans again.
Just a few days removed from being held to just 6 points on 2 of 9 shooting in Columbus, Michigan State's senior captain took a season high 17 shots. Neitzel drained 9 of those field-goal attempts including 6 of 12 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Neitzel finished with 28 points, the most ever in the Big Ten tournament for a Spartan. Michigan State's old high water mark was 22 points.
Afterward Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo praised Neitzel for aggressively looking for his shot. Neitzel said Saturday's game was the best he has felt this season as a scorer.
Michigan State needed every one of Neitzel's 28 points in their 67-60 win over Ohio State, as the Spartans' leading scorer Raymar Morganwas held to just 8 points on 3 of 12 shooting. Morgan found other ways to contribute and Neitzel's co-captain Travis Walton said Morgan played his best defensive game of the season.
