Tigers lose tough one at home
South Carolina broke open a tight game with an 11-0 run in the second half and held on for a 69-63 win over Auburn Saturday night at Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
Auburn closed to within three points on a 3-point play by Frank Tolbert with 1:13 remaining but the Gamecocks made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch and AU converted just one of its final four shots.
"That was disappointing," said AU head coach Jeff Lebo. "These are the games you have to gut out and find a way to win. We're undersized and all that stuff but we can play better than we played today.
"I saw it coming. We just weren't mature enough, I don't think as a team, to handle it. You want to play in this league you have to be able to handle these games."
The loss drops Auburn (14-13, 4-10 SEC) into a tie with Alabama for last place in the SEC West. South Carolina (13-15, 5-9) remains in fifth place in the SEC East.
