Love ready to see old friend
A year ago Bruin freshman sensation Kevin Love and Trojan super frosh O.J. Mayo were among the best high school players in the nation. Both young men were highly decorated for their skills on the hardwood. They became competitors and friends on the AAU circuit and once again they will square off when the Bruins host the Trojans this Saturday.
Love met with the press on Wednesday and took on questions about his friendship with Mayo, his own college career and the USC game.
Do you remember the first time you played against O.J. Mayo how old you were?
Love: "It was my eighth grade year in the national championship at actually the Milk House in Orlando at Disney World. That was the first time I played against him. We actually lost to him.
Who was Mayo playing for?
Love: "The D-I Greyhounds that was his AAU team and I was playing for my Portland Lazers team. We lost to him by six.
When did you become friends with him or are you friends?
Love: "Yes, I would say our freshman year we really respected each other and became friends just because of the relationship we had off the court, but also because we respect each other on the court as well.
What do you respect most about his game?
Love: "Just that he's a competitor. He's afraid of failure and he never wants to lose. I would say that's what I respect most about him.
Have you guys texted one another yet this week?
Love: "No, like I have been saying. I probably don't want to text him before the game or talk to him until we get to the game. I will shoot him a good luck because he's a competitor I've known for awhile, but I want UCLA to come out on top.
