New Orleans pulls shocker
North Carolina State senior small forward Gavin Grant was poised to be the hero of the game, not just for his offense, but also for what appeared to be a game-saving defensive play.
In an instant, a new hero emerged.
Grant knocked the ball away from New Orleans guard Bo McCalebb, only to have it go to Privateers guard T.J. Worley. The shooting guard collected himself and banked in a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left for the game-winning shot to give New Orleans a 65-63 victory Sunday at the RBC Center.
"Our mental toughness tonight, we didn't have it," NC State coach Sidney Lowe said. "I told the guys that it isn't about individuals, it is about NC State. It is about going out to play for the school and not yourself. I felt we were a little selfish on things at times.
"I told them, I hope they really hurt right now. I hope they never want to have that feeling again."
NC State fell to 1-1 on the season, and play in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., against Rider on Nov. 22. The players hope to get rid of the sting of losing.
