The picture of Georgia's football team working out at the crack of dawn Thursday morning might have seemed a strange sight to folks passing by the Bulldogs' Woodruff Practice Field facility.
But according to head coach Mark Richt, whose team wrapped up its preparations for Saturday's game against Kentucky (12:30 p.m.), it might not be so unusual any more.
Richt said he would consider moving Georgia's practices to earlier in the day, if he thought a schedule change would benefit the players involved.
"I would do anything I could to make our schedules better for our players where they could get to where they need to be, to where they need to eat. We have a very tight schedule in the fall for our true freshmen. I've talked to a lot of people and they tell me their true freshmen are getting worn slap out, with study hall and all the things you've got to ask them to do," Richt said. "I don't know if trading the time would make it better, but if it would, I would consider that."
Typically, the Bulldogs begin practice in the late afternoons, ranging from anywhere from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Thursday morning's workout began at 5:30 a.m., so that players could take in a Swahili Cultural Festival on campus, plus other academic activities that were going on in the afternoon.
Aside from a blown transformer which knocked out the practice lights, Thursday's workout went off without a hitch.
The high wind that blew through Athens in the afternoon was a non-factor during the morning hours.
The cooler temperatures were also a welcomed change.
"We wanted to make sure we warmed them up real good so we took another five minutes. Then the very first thing we do after that in Period 1, the pass skeleton drill, we throw a long bomb to (Mohamed) Massaquoi. Coach (strength coach Dave) VanHalanger was cringing because he's in charge of warming them up and if he had pulled a hamstring on the very first play on a cold morning at the crack of dawn, he'd have probably gotten blamed for it," Richt said. "He was like, 'What are you throwing a bomb on the first play for?'"
Will Richt get down with Soulja Boy?
