Media day notebook: Self high on Reed
Bill Self, Darnell Jackson, Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers arrived at the Marriott Hotel off of Main Street on the Plaza bright and early this morning. After speaking for 15 minutes, Self met with the media for an extended session during Big 12 media day. Jayhawk Slant was on hand and is here to provide with you an update from Self's hour-long session.
Self has high praise for team:
It didn't take long for Self to express his feelings for this team. He spent the first part of Big 12 media day talking about his team and how much he enjoys them. Self also briefly touched on what to expect this season is terms of the play of his Jayhawks.
"I love our guys," said Self. "I like our team a lot. I think we are fast and athletic. We played at a pretty high level last year and we return a majority of those guys. I think we kind of know, hopefully, what to expect, in a positive way.
"There are a lot of unknowns," he added. "Each team is different. We certainly are going to miss Julian Wright. We don't know how Brandon Rush is going to be just yet. With the seven returning guys that played so many minutes and Rodrick Stewart, Brady Morningstar, Jeremy Case, Tyrel Reed and Cole Aldrich, we have some nice pieces that we can add to that."
Self expects freshmen to contribute:
During Monday's Big 12 media day session, Self spent quite a bit of time talking about his freshmen class. While he expects a number of them to contribute, he couldn't stop talking about the play of Tyrel Reed.
According to Self, Reed is much further along than he originally expected the Burlington, Kan., native to be at this stage.
"Conner Teahan is going to be a good player, too," said Self. "He is playing on the perimeter where we have some pretty good guys right now. He is going to be a good player. I think Tyrel Reed would be in our rotation. I do. I'm real impressed with Tyrel.
