Hoops Notes: Tide preps for Canada trip
While the 2007-08 college basketball season is still a few months away, Mark Gottfried and the Alabama Crimson Tide are getting an early start to the season with a trip to Canada to face some international competition over Labor Day Weekend.
The trip comes courtesy of an NCAA rule that allows basketball programs to go on international trips once every four years and allows a total of 10 team practices leading up to the trip. The Tide's trip will take them to Ottawa where they will face off in exhibition games against four Canadian college teams including McGill University, University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Queens University.
"This is a good opportunity for our team to get an early look at things," said Gottfried. "It's an opportunity to experiment with some things offensively and defensively plus it gives us ten extra practices, some time with our team on the floor."
Gottfried said he thinks the trip will be particularly beneficial for his three incoming freshmen, guards Senario Hillman and Rico Pickett and forward Justin Knox.
