2007 Post-Spring analysis: Linebackers
A smart move by WVU defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Jeff Casteel last winter was to make sure outside linebackers J.T. Thomas and John Holmes get more playing time. The experiment turned into success this spring. How solid Thomas/Holmes become depends on how quickly they grow up at their new spots. Thomas made the travel team as a freshman then missed most of the year with an injury. Holmes was a safety in 2006.
Casteel vows to find ways to pressure quarterbacks and Thomas would be a good start. He is down as a blitzer. Holmes will be more confident playing closer to the line where his strength will be an asset, rather than chasing running backs on pass routes.
Another experiment that seems to be sticking is Reed Williams' move inside. He shared playing time with Bobby Hathaway at Sam last season, but moved in to replace Jay Henry.
