Recent statistics: For his senior season, Matthews recorded 158 tackles, ten sacks, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. He had an interception returned for a touchdown called back because of an illegal block. For his efforts, Matthews was named first-team all-league, all-county and all-CIF. He also played in the inaugural Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Fort Lauderdale (Fla.).
