Quarterbacks take a lickin, keep on tickin
The theme of Saturday's scrimmage seemed to be quarterbacks on their butts. With beloved senior Troy Smith off the to the NFL and a new crop of youngsters trying to win his job, the coaches and defensive players certainly didn't award any of them the Smith treatment. Instead Todd Boeckman, Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton took crushing blow after crushing blow from a hungry, physical defense that wasn't going to leave the Woody Hayes Athletic Center without those scarlet jerseys.
"The coaches really emphasized effecting the quarterbacks," defensive end Lawrence Wilson said. "Really force them to make bad throws."
The wave after wave of blitzes the defensive coaches sent Saturday gave the three new guys a little glimpse of what Smith saw from Florida back in January.
"We wanted a little more pressure on the quarterbacks today," coach Jim Tressel said. "Sometimes you put on those black jerseys and the rush eases up. You have to do the right amount of live to keep these guys sharp. When things are live, that's when you're really evaluated."
The blitzes seemed to come even more frequently and more furoshiously when Henton was in the game.
"We were trying to get him thinking a little bit," cornerback Donald Washington said. "Try to get him back on his heals."
