Chappell shines in scrimmage
Mike Pegram
Peegs.com It may not have been a great day for the Hoosier offense in Saturday's scrimmage but it certainly appeared to be a solid day of work for redshirt freshman quarterback Ben Chappell. The 6-foot-3, 233-pound player from Bloomington South had an unofficial stat total of 9-17 passing for 101 yards and no interceptions. This follows up a solid passing day in the Hoosiers first spring scrimmage on March 31st.
"He was 13-18 last week and has really had a great spring," said Indiana quarterbacks coach Matt Canada after Saturday's scrimmage. "We have been very, very happy with Ben."
Not only has Chappell been solid for a newcomer passing the ball, he has also tucked the ball under and run several times in each scrimmage.
"He can run the ball," says Canada. "We are running the spread offense and the quarterback is part of it. We all know he is not the athlete Kellen is but he does what he needs to do and if you don't account for him he'll go. He had about a 12-yard run today. He won't run away from a lot of people but he you have to account for him and he is such a smart player."
