Back with a bang
It's been a long time coming, but the Horns are officially back at it. On Friday night, in front of a sparse crowd and under gray skies, the Texas Longhorn football team went through its first practice of the spring season.
As always, there were plenty of new faces playing prominent roles, and most of the chatter among the fans in attendance was focused on the two back-up quarterbacks.
Here's a notebook from the Horns' first spring practice:
ALL EYES ON NOS. 7 AND 17
The practice had a much different vibe than the past few years, when all the focus was on the starting quarterbacks, either Vince Young or Colt McCoy. Young is long gone and everyone already knows what McCoy brings to the table, but Friday night was the fans' first chance to see Sherrod Harris and John Chiles in action.
Both young quarterbacks, along with McCoy made some nice throws over the course of the workout, and Chiles surprised many with his strong play in his first formal workout as a Longhorn. Both he and Harris are known as guys that can make plays with their legs out of the pocket, but on Friday they showcased their arms.
Chiles made a few very nice reads to get rid of the ball in the flat, and Harris hooked up with Montre Webber on a deep ball for the play of the night.
It's only one workout, and one can't get too excited about what's shown in the practices with no pads, but it's certainly better to see the young quarterbacks finding some success than it would have been to see them struggle throughout the night.
