Conference Capsule: McCarney out at ISU
The Big 12 Conference will lose a good one. Dan McCarney, the longest-tenured head coach in the Big 12 Conference and who led Iowa State to an unprecedented five bowls in seven seasons, announced Wednesday night he would not return to the sideline next year. Entering this season, only Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma had gone to more bowl games than the Cyclones since 2000.
Behind a 2006 schedule that in the summer was deemed as the second toughest in the nation and a tumultuous past five weeks that saw leading receiver Todd Blythe and leading rusher Stevie Hicks absent at times due to injury or illness, Iowa State has lost five straight entering a 1 p.m. kickoff at Colorado on Saturday.
The Cyclones, 3-7 overall and 0-6 in the Big 12, are in the North division basement, just behind the Buffaloes, 1-9 and 1-5.
