Gary Johnson: 'He has what you can't teach'
Aldine forward Gary Johnson has been feeling the recruiting pressure for well over a year. Stay in state and play for the Texas Longhorns? Follow in the footsteps of former Houston Hoops players and play for Arizona? Head east and play for SEC power Kentucky or Big East power Connecticut?
On Monday, Johnson put all of the pressure behind him and made the decision to commit to the Texas Longhorns. Zeke Smith has coached Johnson the past three years at Aldine High and has an understanding of the type of pressure Johnson has been under, being a national top 25 player in the 2007 class. Smith says the Longhorns won the battle for the five-star prospect by being consistent in their recruitment.
"To be honest, they have done a good job recruiting him," Smith said. "Texas never bombarded Gary like some other schools did and he had a chance to sit back and allow that to penetrate his mind. Eventually, whether he makes it to the NBA or not, he wants to reside in Texas and getting a degree from Texas will allow him the best chance for success."
