Nwankwo checks out the Gators
Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna offensive lineman Emeka Nwankwo is reaching double-digits in terms of scholarship offers and recently made an unofficial visit to an in-state program planted firmly inside his top five.
The 6-foot-5, 280-pounder holds scholarship offers from Florida, Auburn, Central Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Virginia and Florida International.
He traveled to Gainesville, Fla., for Florida's spring game last weekend and came away impressed with the Gators program.
"It was really good," Nwankwo said. "I really enjoyed Florida. They showed me around campus and I watched them practice on Friday night.
"On Saturday, I went to the spring game. I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed watching them hit. I enjoyed watching Tim Tebow throw the ball. He did better than I thought he would. I didn't expect him to step in as a true freshman and do as well as he did."
Though the Gators made a positive impression, Nwankwo did not name them as his leader. They are, however, currently in his top six.
"Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Florida, Auburn, Virginia and Ole Miss," Nwankwo said. "Those are my top schools (in no order). There is no leader."
Nwankwo also wants to take several visits and take his time with his decision.
"I was thinking about deciding early, just to get it out of the way," he said. "But now, I've decided I am going to take some other trips and see some other schools."
He hops to make unofficial visits to UCF and Georgia in the near future.
Three-time Rivals.com top 25 recruiter John Holliday is recruiting Nwankwo for Florida. Joe Gilbert is the recruiter-of-record for the Golden Knights while Willie Martinez is leading the charge for the Bulldogs.
Nwankwo projects as a guard at the next level.
"I have the speed and quickness to play guard," he said. "I'd also rather play guard."
He recently was one of the top offensive line performers at the Miami NIKE Camp on April 9 in Coral Gables, Fla.
"I did real good at the NIKE Camp," he said. "I enjoyed myself."
