Fall Camp Preview: Running Backs
Offensive lineman | Sean Harlow + Grant Bays
MORE: Fall Camp Headquarters
While the improvement in the run game from 2011-'12 was something for Coach Riley to be happy about, the Beavers' 124.38 yards per game in 2012 was only good for 10th in conference and 100th nationally.
POSITION VITALS
THE BASICS
Returning Starters: Storm Woods
Others Returning: Terron Ward and Chris Brown
Newcomers: Damien Haskins
Departures: Malcolm Agnew, Jordan Jenkins
2012 NUMBERS TO KNOW
•The Beavers ranked 10th in the conference in rushing yards. A step up from their 12th place 2011 finish.
• Storm Woods ranked 7th in the PAC 12 for rushing yards. Terron Ward was 22nd.
BATTLE TO WATCH
While Storm Woods looks to be the starter and has gotten stronger in the off-season, watch Terron Ward as he is a tough competitor.
Putting that into perspective, OSU's stout run defense allowed 5.1 more rushing yards per contest than the Beaver offense generated. Armchair quarterbacks around Beaver Nation thought the run game may not have been utilized enough in certain game situations, but the 2013 Beaver run game looks to be poised for big numbers.
Jordan Jenkins, a 3rd string tailback, and Malcolm Agnew (transfer) are gone (the duo combined for 268 yards and one score) and OSU returns 1,355 yards and 19 touchdowns along with 392 receiving yards out of the backfield. Storm Woods is entrenched as the starter, however stout/powerful Terron Ward showed he's capable of putting up big numbers when called upon.
QUESTION HEADING INTO CAMP
The running back position is loaded at the 1 and 2 spots. Redshirt freshman Chris Brown is expected to take the next step and hopefully in lopsided games will see time in the backfield to prepare him for 2014.
The only real question surrounding the 2013 OSU ground game is; just how good can it be? With the experience up front and in the backfield, OSU should expect to get a 1,000 yard rusher (Woods was 60 yards short in 2012) and greatly eclipse their 2012 run totals.
