Into the spotlight
HOOVER | There are other places like SEC Media Days, surreal outposts where reporters and trolls stand shoulder to shoulder among important athletic personalities, but no place in America can mimic the sheer size of this spectacle.
The league has empowered more than 1,200 people to ask questions of the best football players and coaches in college football. The Wynfrey Hotel's main ballroom, for three days in July, becomes a clearinghouse for information, optimism, rumor, speculation and even a few jokes.
This is what it's become. Seven consecutive national titles has a way of doing that.
Auburn won't be making waves this week. The head coach despises that kind of marketing and now has enough speaking experience to turn the most sophomoric clown question into a banal response. I mean that as a compliment.
Gus Malzahn is a football coach. He's not an entertainer.
