More bad news for basketball Bulldogs
The hits just keep on coming for Rick Ray and the Mississippi State men's basketball team.
The Bulldogs are now down to only five scholarship players with Monday's announcement that sophomore forward Roquez Johnson has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.
It is the second player Ray has had to suspend junior guard Jalen Steele on Feb. 9 also for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Steele has not played or even dressed out for MSU's last three games.
Johnson and Steele were the only two active scholarship players with previous playing experience heading into this season. Steele was averaging 9.3 points per game while Johnson was adding 8.8 points and 4.5 rebounds.
Ray had to suspend junior forward Colin Borchert earlier in the season. He also dismissed Shaun Smith and Kristers Ziedaks from the team before the year began, all for violations for team rules.
Group all the suspensions and dismissals with three season ending injuries to Andre Applewhite, Jacoby Davis and Wendell Lewis have left the Bulldogs roster depleted.
Ray also lost forwards Arnett Moultrie and Renardo Sidney, who both turned pro a year early and guards Rodney Hood and DeVille Smith, who transferred in the offseason.
"I think our team right now is in a little bit of flux with us only having five scholarship guys down from our alotted number," Ray said. "We've been playing most of the time with seven."
