Staten: 'No excuses, no explanations'
EAST LANSING - Michigan State offensive line coach Mark Staten met with media on Wednesday to discuss the progress and struggles of the Spartans' injury-riddled offensive line.
Staten discussed the progress of Donavon Clark, who made his first career start in an emergency capacity at left tackle last week at Michigan.
Staten was encouraged by Clark's performance, yet believes Clark is a "prototypical guard" for the future. Clark is expected to be back on the second string this week as regular starter Dan France is due back in the starting lineup after missing last week with a concussion.
"We feel good about Dan," Staten said. "He should be 100 percent go this weekend."
Staten also felt good about Blake Treadwell's second start of the year at left guard.
"I think Treaddie really worked through that injury he had in the preseason," Staten said. "He missed the entire August and one quarter of the season.
"Last week he showed through practice that none of those pains from the injury were lingering anymore. He was able to play fast, play solid and play physical. You saw in some holes where he really got around there and smacked linebackers. I think that was a good start to move forward."
The Spartans utilized their sixth different offensive line of the season during last week's loss at Michigan. Three starting offensive linemen were unavailable last week. Center Travis Jackson and right tackle Fou Fonoti are out for the season.
"You don't sleep a whole lot," Staten said, when asked about the challenges. "We need to press forward. It's a testament to these young guys, stepping up when they need to step up. We are pretty far down the line (on our depth). You look at last week and Chris McDonald was the only guy in the lineup that played a year ago. We are far down there. We will continue to strive forward. There are no excuses, no explanations. That's the way you have to play this game."
