Today was practice No. 13 for the Army Black Knights, as they are just 16 days away from their season opener on the road against San Diego State.
Offensively, today's practice went real well. It was the ball club's first time running through a game week (Thursday) type of practice and overall it appeared as though offensive scheme ran smoothly.
There's a sense of anxiousness amongst the squad, who have that "can't wait to get to the actual game week", look in their eyes.
Starting center and Rimington Trophy Award candidate Ryan Powis is still out, as veteran utility lineman Will Wilson has stepped up and in during Powis' absence.
Even with Powis on the sidelines the unit is really starting to come together and the leadership of Trent Steelman and offensive left guard Frank Allen have set the tone for how the "O" is playing, which is low, fast and straight ahead football.
Up front with Allen is right guard Steve Shumaker, tackles Dan Whitaker and Michael Kime, along with Will Wilson at center for Powis.
The trio of Raymond Maples, Terry Baggett and Larry Dixon are a lock as the starting backfield, along Steelman under center, with Hayden Tippett backing up Dixon.
Presently running with the 2nd unit backfield are slotbacks, Stephen Fraser, Jon Crucitti and fullback Dan McGue.
Black Knights' Defense
On the defensive side of the ball, both Josh Jackson and Tyler Dickson are holding down the fort at cornerback spots. On the next level are safeties Ty Shrader(free safety) and Hayden Pierce (strong safety/rover).
Backing up Shrader is a pick'em right now, with Kyler Martin or Brandon Fusilier-Jefferies.
As mentioned in a recent GBK article, frosh cornerback Chris Carnegie continues to progress and when you ask around the Black Knights' football camp, the proverbial feeling is, 'Carnegie is what you want a CB to look like.
The Black Knights have on on Friday, but resume practice on Saturday as they undertake their 2nd scrimmage of summer training camp.
