The next step for Stricklin
The jury is still out on Mississippi State director of athletics Scott Stricklin's basketball hire last week but on paper it appears he hit a home run signing Texas A&M associate head coach Vic Shaefer to lead the Lady Bulldogs.
Now Stricklin will be charged with an even bigger challenge in its men's basketball coaching search following the retirement of Rick Stansbury on Thursday.
"These aren't easy jobs and Rick did it very well for a long time," Stricklin said. "We have to make sure we do a really good job of finding somebody who can maintain and build off that. I'm going to pay whatever we need to get who we are interested in."
Stricklin's search began immediately following Thursday's press conference but he may not be able to talk to all of the coaching candidates until the NCAA Tournament is over. He stated there is no timetable in making a hire.
"Going forward we'll look for the right guy - the right fit," Stricklin said. "We'll take however long it takes to identify whoever that is understanding, and I'm just speculating, that some people are still playing and you have to wait until they finish up before you can talk to them whether it be a head coach or assistant coach."
Stricklin, who is wrapping up his second year as director of athletics at MSU, did not rule out the possibility of hiring one of the current Bulldog assistants as was the case when Stansbury took over for Richard Williams in 1998.
