A Look Ahead: Running Backs
The Houston Cougars have put the 2012 recruiting class in the books and have begun to move on to getting prepared for the 2012 football season. The first step in that process for the new staff will be to get ready for the upcoming spring workouts.
CougarsDen continues it's Look Ahead series which is sponsored by Chastang Ford with a look today at the running backs and who is likely to earn the reps being given up by departed seniors Bryce Beall and Michael Hayes.
The obvious first name in the discussion is returning running back Charles Sims will take his turn as the veteran of the Cougars talented backfield. With Case Keenum, the Cougars lose three seniors that saw significant playing time in last year's backfield and will depend on Sims experience on the field to lead the younger players.
The 2011 All-Conference running back will look to improve on his 821 rushing yards and 575 receiving yards. Sims's 1,396 all-purpose yards was good for fourth on last year's team and is tops amongst returning players.
Sims will see plenty of carries in the spring but is truly the player at the running back position that has nothing to worry about as he will be the starter come the fall.
Other players that will look to pick up the slack from the departing seniors will be senior Braxton Welford[db] who has shown some flashes over the last couple years but has battled the injury bug as well. Welford definitely has the skill set to earn playing time but will need to avoid any more major injuries for the Cougars to count on him in the fall.
Senior [db]Chris Wilson will also look to return from a season missed with major injury last season and his ability to get back out on the field healthy will likely be the deciding factor into his roll with the team as he has the most experience of the guys that will be in the hunt for carries.
Redshirt freshman Kenneth Farrow returns to his natural position of running back which he exceled at at L.D. Bell High School and will look to earn some reps and help with the depth. He will be joined by redshirt sophomore Randall Hollimon, redshirt freshman Brandon Ellison, senior Marcell Bates and redshirt freshman Vernon Jefferies who will all be looking to make their case for carries in the fall.
