Bulldogs survive a scare
STARKVILLE, Miss., Things certainly did not look to be in Mississippi State's favor Friday night trailing Appalachian State by nine points with only two minutes remaining.
But the Bulldogs were able to rally back and prevail 76-74 thanks to a clutch 3-pointer by db]Riley Benock[/db], three free throws by Brian Bryant and a fast break layup by Jalen Steele down the final stretch.
"It was a team effort," said MSU head coach Rick Stansbury. "Everybody who came off that bench played some positions that we hadn't even practiced. We found ways to scramble around there at the end to get some turnovers."
MSU was able to get one final stop when the Mountaineers took possession with eight seconds to play. Kodi Augustus switched off and was able to get his fingertips on a Donald Sims 3-pointer at the buzzer that secured the Bulldogs 2-0 record.
"The last play of the game, we switched that ball screen at the end with Sims and Kodi contested the shot and blocked it," Stansbury said. "That was a huge play for Kodi."
Sims had scored 40 points already on State on 11-of-31 shooting including seven 3-pointers.
